Clwb Rygbi in Ninian Stuart Cup

Appalling weather meant that the Seconds' Ninian Stuart Cup Quarter Final against Clwb Rygbi had to be moved to Pontcanna Fields . Rumney were sent into defensive mode straight from the kick off as Clwb Rygbi took play into the Rumney half. Rumney's backs were caught offside and the Clwb Rygbi No.10 put them 3 - 0 ahead with a penalty from 30 metres. Rumney immediately hit back as scrum half Tom Dawkes and outside half Luke Fear linked with centre Callum McDonald who was held up 5 metres out. From the ensuing scrum No 8 Josh Dean picked up and broke away on the blindside to cross for a well taken, unconverted try. Both sides were moving the ball at every opportunity and only good defence kept Clwb Rygbi at bay with flanker Anthony Leach, prop Jack McAdam and hooker Jacob Hurley putting in some fine tackles. The Rumney eight started to gain the upper hand and captain Ryan Mathews, prop John DeLloyd, and No 8 Josh Dean were involved in good forward drives.

The second half saw Rumney bring on centre Cain Sutton, flanker Tom Rogers, props Marley Lovell and Harry Jarrett and scrum half Morgan Williams. This strong bench gave Rumney an immediate boost and they were all involved as Rumney drove deep into Clwb Rygbi's half. Luke Fear kicked a penalty to give Rumney an 8 - 3 lead. This was increased soon after as centre Cain Sutton kicked ahead and chased the ball into the opposition 22m. From the ruck the ball was worked out to Luke Fear and the outside half dived over for a try that he also converted to put Rumney ahead by 15 points to 3. Fear was again involved when, following a movement involving Anthony Leach and Harry Jarrett, Morgan Williams threw out a quick pass to Jake Sutton put him over for a try. Luke narrowly missed the conversion and the final whistle sounded to give Rumney the victory by 20 points to 3.
