Rumney 2nds Crash out of Ninian

Rumney II's and St Peters II's met in the Ninian Stuart Cup semi-final at Llandaff North with St Peters kicking off and immediately pinning Rumney back in their own 22m. Stout defence kept them at bay and a super break Tyler Mahoney, supported by Dan Griffiths and Shaun Regan took play into the St Peters half. However, not for long!  With St Peters, gaining possession and willing to move the ball indiscipline saw Rumney caught offside, the following penalty giving St Peters a 3-point lead. This was soon cancelled out by a Richie Moir penalty but St Peters added a second within minutes following further indiscretion from Rumney. A disjointed Rumney could not stop St Peters who broke away to score a length of the field converted try to put them 13 points to 3 ahead. Rumney came to life briefly and worked their way back up field and strong runs from Jon DeLloyd and Andrew Davies took play to the St Peters line where hooker Mathew Davies dived over near the posts. The conversion by Richie Moir closed the gap to 13 points to 10. The Rumney resurgence was short lived however as St Peters broke away again and sorry tackling allowed them in for another converted try. This was followed by a further penalty to put them in the driving seat at half time leading by 23 points to 10.

Rumney made a number of changes for the restart and immediately looked a different side.Danny Clarke pegged St Peters back into their 22m and with Rumney quickly winning the ensuing line out the ball was sent wide and Clarke powered over for a try which he converted to close the gap to 23 - 17. The game was now a real nip and tuck affair and from a line out the ball reached Christian Edwards who set off on a great run to the St Peters half only for the move to fizzle out due to poor passing and handling but St Peters were caught offside and Danny Clarke's penalty saw Rumney cut the deficit to 3 points. Play moved back into St Peters half and Danny Clarke, Tyler Mahoney, Jon DeLloyd and Wayne Dacruz were all involved before Christian Edwards raced over in the corner for a fine try. Danny Clarke's conversion gave Rumney the lead for the first time at 27 points to 23. St Peters fought back strongly and with minutes to go their efforts were rewarded with a converted try. Despite a frantic last minute effort, Rumney could not beat the whistle and St Peters claimed victory by 30 points to 27 and with it a place in the final.
